Dr Juliet Moses, our
in-house s3x and relationship expert is back from a short rest and takes
us on a topical issue that has ravaged many homes: pregnancy and making
babies.
When you are trying to get
pregnant and it seems all your efforts are yielding no fruit, it is not
yet time to press the panic button. It is not yet time to blame the
witches from your village or pour your frustrations on your spouse.
Years of research from fertility experts have shown that some of the reasons could be the s3x positions you practice; or neglect.
Note that not all s3xual positions
are created equal when trying to get pregnant. Find out the top
positions and try out our top tips to keep in mind when having
intercourse.
There are many discussions about
conceiving and which positions for intercourse are best. Many people
believe that the s3xual position does not have any influence on the
ability to conceive. Naturally, a woman can get pregnant by having
intercourse in any position, or almost any position.
However,
if a couple is not able to conceive, the first thing they should
consider is to experiment a bit more in the bedroom, and try a couple of
new positions.
However, bear in mind that getting
pregnant may not all boil down to the s3x position you and your husband
adopt. Actually, it's surprising as many people get pregnant as they
do.
If everything is in working order for both
partners and the timing is just right, you still only have a 25% chance
of egg + sperm = pregnancy. Many people believe that there are a few
things you can do to improve your odds while trying.
Now try these positions:
Missionary position
The
missionary position, which gets its name from the belief that early
missionaries advocated this to be the only position that was not sinful,
is actually the best for getting pregnant.
It is a
very easy position to adopt, with the man on top, and it is comfortable
and it allows excellent face-to-face and body contact. In the
traditional missionary position, the woman lies on her back with her
legs spread and both of her knees bent and her feet firm on the bed,
while the man is on top facing her.
There are also
variations on the basic missionary position, whereby the woman raises
one or both of her legs, for example, and the man holds them or places
them on his shoulders.
Or, the woman can extend
one or both of her knees. It is true that the missionary position is one
of the best s3x positions if you want to get pregnant because there is
generally deeper penetration, but this does not apply to all couples.
Generally,
the uterus is positioned anteversum, which means that it bends towards
the front. Therefore, the missionary position is best for these women,
because it allows the uterus to drop back when the woman is lying on her
back, thus allowing the semen to enter the uterus and the fallopian
tubes much easier.
Some women, however, have the
uterus positioned retroversum, towards the back. This is not abnormal,
but not as common, and these women can just as easily conceive a child.
But it might be harder for them to conceive if they choose the
missionary position.
Rear-entry position
Another
great position for conceiving a baby, and the actual best if the woman
has a retroversed uterus, is the rear-entry position, when the woman is
lying on her abdomen or is kneeling.
This position
also allows good body contact, and most important, the uterus drops to
the front, so that the sperm has enough space to enter the cervix and
then the uterus.
Furthermore, the sperm can be deposited close to the cervix, with deeper penetration, improving the chances of getting pregnant.
Side-by-side position
Lying
side-by-side can be a relaxing position for couples and easier on a
partner who is overweight or may have a back problem. Side-by-side can
either be face-to-face or in the “spoon” position with a rear-entry from
behind.
Tips to keep in mind
Timing is everything
When
our mothers warned us it could happen the first time no matter when we
had s3x, they were mostly trying to scare us. Granted, it can happen,
but the best time to get pregnant is when you're ovulating, usually
somewhere between days 12 and 20 of your cycle.
There's
a whole science to determining when you're ovulating; you can pee on a
stick, check your cervical mucus, or chart your temperature. Find out
which fertility test and monitor what works best for you and circle the
day on your calendar.
s3x every day when you're
ovulating is ideal if the sperm count is good; if not, aim for every
other day instead. Men should refrain from unproductive ejaculation for
48 hours prior to the woman's fertile time.
Get an oil change
While
sperm can be pretty hardy, it doesn't take much to slow them down.
Unfortunately, using most kinds of oils, lubricants or similar products
can keep sperm from getting where it wants to go.
Even
if your lubricant doesn't contain a spermicide (such as nonoxynol-9),
it may contain other ingredients that can be toxic to sperm. A product
named ConceivEase, developed by gynecologists, is the most
fertility-friendly lubricant on the market.
Some
kinds of s3x play need to wait until later in the month when you're not
trying to have a baby. Since saliva can slow down sperm on the way to
meet the eggs, oral s3x should be kept to minimum when trying to
conceive.
Get natural
Natural
treatments such as vitamins and herbs which are thought to restore a
woman's ovulation cycles and improve a man's sperm count can also be an
important aspect of helping a couple get pregnant.
Optimize your position
Any
type of s3x can result in conception, but if you're having trouble,
woman on top may not be your best option. Like we earlier discussed, the
missionary position is the best when trying to get pregnant. Having
intercourse in this position it allows the sperm better access to the
cervix.
Post-coital Tilt
When
you're done playing, stick a pillow under your hips and elevate them
slightly for 15-20 minutes. You're increasing your odds and sperm
swimming to the cervix. You don't have to put your legs in the air and
you don't need an expensive infertility pillow either, just throw a
towel over the pillow and get comfy. Again, this is more of a common
sense measure that is not scientifically confirmed to produce results
but it can't hurt.
Top s3x tips when trying to make a baby
Tip #1
The
man should keep his pen!s as deeply as possible in the vagina, both
during and after ejaculating, to reduce to minimum the leakage of semen.
Tip #2
Also, after pulling out, the man can press the woman’s labia gently, preventing further leakage.
Tip #3
Another
important thing that the woman should do is lie on her back or stay on
her abdomen for 20 or 30 minutes, with her pelvis slightly elevated. Let
gravity do its work!
Tip #4
Most important, relax and enjoy making love! Stress is known to be a main cause of infertility.
