Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labor and Employment has brought a flicker of hope for the teeming population of unemployed Nigerian youths.
Ngige said the Federal Government would venture into a new approach
to battle the massive youth unemployment that’s been prevalent in the
country for years.
He claims the new approach would galvanize the economy to the advantage of the people.
The minister said on Tuesday, that the government would discard the
previous unproductive ways of tackling the unemployment problem and
embrace new ideas.
He said his ministry would focus on skill acquisition so that people can be self employed instead of being job seekers.
Ngige was in Umuahia to commission an ICT skill acquisition center
which was completed by the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, at
Ugwunagbo Local Government Area.
He said that his ministry is committed to formulating policies that
would combat unemployment and also the NDE would keep a database of
employed, unemployed, under-employed, employable and gainfully employed
youths in the nation for easy assessment.
“Government cannot give employment to everybody, but we can teach
people how to employ themselves. The NDE established the skills
acquisition centers where people are trained on how to do things with
their hands and earn a living for themselves,” Ngige said.
Lofty promises…
